WithHair Full of Secrets, we're bringing you the tried-and-true products, rituals, and recommendations your favorite celebrities, founders, and influencers swear by.

Brooke Shields' entertainment career spans decades, making her an undeniable icon across generations. She did it all throughout the '80s and '90s, from fronting Calvin Klein campaigns to starring in projects like the 1989 film Brenda Starr and NBC sitcom Suddenly Susan, which ran from 1996 to 2000. In the early aughts and 2010s, Shields became known for roles on Hannah Montana, Lipstick Jungle, and Jane the Virgin. Today, the model-actress remains booked and busy, starring in the Netflix film Mother of the Bride just last year.

Having spent most of her life in front of the camera, Shields has not only learned the tricks of the trade when it comes to acting and modeling, but she's also become keenly aware of the beauty routines that work for her. More specifically, the hair care routines that work for her. Over the years, Shield says she's been on an evolving journey with her hair, one that's been influenced by everything from color damage to menopause.

With all the highs and lows she's experienced with her hair, it's fitting Shields poured all the knowledge she's amassed into Commence, a hair care brand tailored to the needs of aging women. Ahead, Shields shares more about her hair evolution, weekly maintenance routine, and what's next for Commence.

About Her Hair

"When I was younger, and honestly until my 40s, my hair belonged to everyone else. In high school, I wanted to have permed, feathered hair like everyone else. Then, I started working for hair brands, and they all dictated what my hair would look like. Then, I took on acting roles where I had to color my hair. For Brenda Starr, I had to strip all the color from my hair and dye it bright red. For Suddenly Susan, I went blonde. For so many years, my hair was in recovery. When I hit my mid-40s, I started to push back and say, 'I'm not going to do that to my hair.'"

Her Hair Care Routine

"Once I hit a certain age, my hair started to get frizzy, the texture changed, and it lost its luster. So, my hair care routine became about something much bigger. I don't wash my hair every day, but when I do, I use our Detoxifying Shampoo and Probiotic Smoothing Conditioner. The shampoo creates a nice lather without stripping your hair. The conditioner doesn't weigh your hair down and hydrates every strand. I also use our Root Serum, 3-in-1 Leave-In Conditioner, and Shine-Enhancing Detangler daily."

Her Signature Hairstyle

"My favorite signature hairstyle would be beach waves. It is the closest to my natural hair texture, but it just elevates the look a bit more. Whenever I am on day two or three of my beach waves blowout, I will just add in a little of our 2-In-1 Instant Shampoo to absorb any excess sebum or oil from my scalp and add some volume."

Her Favorite Red Carpet Hair Moment

"The 2008 Emmys. I loved this look because it was sexy but not overdone. It didn’t feel theatrical—it felt very authentic to me."

Her Hair Icon

"One of my hair icons is Renee Russo. I love her tousled, layered look. Also, I love Brigitte Bardot. I love her voluminous blonde hair and iconic half-up, half-down look."

Her Favorite Hair Tool

"I love the Yves Durif Vented Hairbrush. It is the absolute best, especially for my long hair. I have been using this brush for years."

Her Plans for Commence

"We have two hair products in the pipeline right now, and then we will take our messaging into the body category. We want to work from the crown of the head down. All of our products have sold out at least once, so what we have to do now is keep a certain pace that allows us to grow but not overextend ourselves. We never want to lose sight of our customers and community. We're walking before we run, but starting to walk faster."
